Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of engineering leadership experience.
  • 12 years of experience working with cross-functional stakeholders and collaborating with technical individuals and teams.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 20 years of experience in engineering leadership.
  • Experience with cross-functional engineering leadership promoting product excellence and collaboration.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders or influence through diplomacy and persuasion.
  • Demonstrated success leading initiatives, developing policies or thought leadership in regulated, high visibility domains.
  • Deep technical and security expertise with infrastructure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

About the job

The Cloud Engineering Director for the Cloud/Open Ecosystems (COE) team will advance the mission of driving usage of Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and other public cloud technologies by Alphabet. In this role, you will build and drive adoption of Public Cloud platforms to enable Alphabet’s product areas, bets, and acquisitions to build cloud-native systems with strong security and privacy controls, and an engineering experience that improves development velocity. Further, you will own the GCP/Alphabet leadership relationship, ensuring incentive and strategic alignment, supporting Alphabet’s public cloud needs.

The rapidly growing capabilities of GCP are critical to meeting the increasing needs of Alphabet’s engineering teams who are adapting to changes in industry practices, demands from stakeholders, and a highly competitive landscape. Making Alphabet the most sophisticated user of GCP and other public cloud technologies is key to making these capabilities available to the engineering teams safely and at-scale.

As the COE Engineering Director, you will lead a team of software, security, and system engineers to define the technical strategy and implement the platforms necessary to enable safe use of public cloud and the building of hybrid systems for Alphabet’s businesses. You will need to work on technical problems across a variety of domains including: cloud infrastructure actuation and management, security and privacy controls and risk management, networking and service connectivity, reliability engineering and observability, and AI/ML. This role also requires forming strong partnerships with engineering, Product Management, and PMO teams who will contribute to the end-to-end solutions we deliver to our customers.

We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a platform strategy for enabling Alphabet’s safe use of GCP and other public clouds. Lead the development, security and privacy evaluation, and implementation of solutions that unlock the power of GCP for our internal customers. 
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team. Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture, and partner with teams in GCP and across Google to drive strategic outcomes across Alphabet’s businesses.
  • Oversee health, maintenance, and continual improvement of the engineering experience, performance, and reliability of platforms supporting Alphabet’s use of public cloud.
  • Partner with Privacy, Safety, and Security to drive continuous monitoring and reductions of security and privacy risks associated with Alphabet’s use of public cloud.
