Director, UX Research, Shopping

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in research-related field, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience managing research and insights teams.
  • Experience working with both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Experimental Psychology, Anthropology, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Consumer experiences, preferably with personalization or social platforms.
  • Experience influencing strategic decision making via research insights and perspectives.
  • Experience applying a diverse set of research methodologies (e.g., interviews, focus groups, field and lab studies, diary study and surveys) and an understanding of their strengths/limitations.
  • Outstanding leadership skills, and comfort leading research in an ambiguous space, working to define methods and approaches.

With team members spread across the global, Human Understanding & Experiences includes one of the largest UX teams at Google and more broadly in Silicon Valley.

Google's Consumer Shopping UX team is responsible for shaping shopping experiences across a broad set of user touch points including Google's largest products: Search, Shopping, Maps, Chrome, and more. Our products are used by people to find, research, and discover the items that meet their needs from the world's largest catalog of offers. This broad ecosystem of products, provides Google a unique vantage point and allows us to build delightful experiences that connect users and merchants everywhere throughout their shopping journey.

As the Director of UX Research for Shopping, you will be leading the user research team to drive amazing Google Shopping experiences, balancing the practical needs of product development with building a foundational knowledge base covering all facets of user needs, motivations, and desired experiences along the shopping journey.

User experience is at the forefront of how we create intuitive, innovative, and beautiful products that people love. We strive to learn and understand our users’ needs, behaviors, and emotions to gather insights that inform product strategy and design. Our UX teams include designers, researchers, content strategists, and engineers who are passionate about quality, usability, and simplicity. We work on collaborative teams to solve complex challenges and craft experiences that highlight our products’ unique capabilities and personalities. Our work touches billions while exemplifying a key principle that is core to Google’s philosophy: “Focus on the user and all else will follow.”

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $253,000-$363,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Guide the creation of a robust, cohesive and actionable program of research, user frameworks and new methods, that stretch across a range of both qualitative and quantitative, that meet the needs of shopping journeys across Google-wide products. 
  • Drive and operationalize insights into action, while ensuring that the value of UXR is represented within our product roadmaps and end user experiences.
  • Guide the development and design of integrated research programs that will transform how we look at the future of shopping.
  • Advocate the role of research in product development and collaborate effectively, both within Shopping and across Google.
  • Lead and grow a team of high-performing mix-method researchers.
