Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
- 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role, overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
- 3 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure or distributed systems.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 3 years of experience working in a matrixed organization.
- Experience in developing query processing engines for a SQL relational database or large-scale distributed systems.
- Experience in distributed computing.

This team represents BigQuery, operating at the complex intersection of advanced query optimization and massive-scale distributed systems. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Drive the design and execution of high-performance components within BigQuery’s execution engine, including query optimizers and control plane components.
- Improve the price-performance and scale of the engine, ensuring solutions are cheap to operate, easy to maintain, and highly reliable.
- Partner with infrastructure teams (e.g., Colossus, MindMeld) and product teams to shape the future of the analytics experience.
- Foster a healthy, transparent, and collaborative team culture. You will be responsible for recruiting top talent, mentoring executive engineers, and improving team velocity and quality.
