Senior Director, Engineering, Google Design Platform

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, other technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience as an engineering leader.
  • Experience building distributed, global teams and partnering with distributed, global stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Experience navigating complex organization environments, and partnering well and developing shared goals with senior leads across the organization.
  • Experience in consumer focused product development and experience understanding in-depth customer/user requirements.
  • Experience with technical innovation within large, complex, and cross-functional engineering environments.
  • Knowledge of full-stack software engineering design practices, including design system development, migrations, and leveraging AI for design creation and acceleration (e.g., design to code, design agents, genUX).

About the job

The Google Design Platform team focuses on enabling developers and designers to build beautiful, useful, and usable products faster and at scale. The team owns a suite of products and platforms, guidelines, components and design assets for internal Google teams as well as external developers.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $349,000-$485,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead a ~130 person engineering organization across multiple geographies, responsible for delivering a high quality technical vision, design, and portfolio of solutions for the way we develop and design products across Google and across our third-party ecosystems. 
  • Set the roadmap and OKRs for the team, strategically balancing customer needs, security, efficiency, useability, and functionality.
  • Drive alignment across the GDP portfolio and teams, as well as with critical partners across Google.
  • Evolve the strategic and technical direction for the team, ensuring that the team’s objectives are aligned with those of Core and Experience.
  • Foster fast and high quality execution in a highly complex and cross-functional environment.
