Mainframe Migration Specialist, Google Cloud

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with z/OS or midrange (AS/400) environments, including COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, or Assembler.
  • 5 years of experience delivering migrations to a cloud provider.
  • Experience with automated conversion tools (e.g., Cloud G4/mainframe refactor, blu age, or mLogica).
  • Experience in modern target languages, specifically Java, Go, or Python.
  • Experience building or using AI Agents and LLM-based frameworks to automate software engineering tasks.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for modernized mainframe applications using Jenkins, GitLab, or Cloud Build.
  • Experience in high-fidelity testing and validation strategies, including data synchronization between DB2/IMS and Cloud SQL/Spanner.
  • Ability to analyze complex legacy systems and provide decisive technical leadership in high-pressure environments.

About the job

As a Mainframe Migration Specialist at Google Cloud, you will be at the forefront of the industry’s most complex digital transformations. You won't just be advising, you will be leading the delivery of end-to-end migration projects that move mission-critical workloads from legacy mainframe environments to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

In this role, you operate as a player-coach. You will architect the solution, directly with the code, and leverage Google’s cutting-edge agentic AI frameworks to automate the refactoring and reimagination of legacy applications. You will be the technical lead for a pod of engineers, ensuring that delivery timelines are met while maintaining the highest standards of system reliability and performance.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$216,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Own the execution of mainframe-to-Google Cloud platform (GCP) migration projects, from initial assessment and discovery, proof of concepts and to final cutover and hypercare.
  • Actively perform code refactoring, data migration, and application modernization. You will lead patterns including rehosting (emulation), re-platforming, and refactoring using automated tool sets.
  • Implement and optimize Agentic AI workflows to accelerate legacy code analysis and transformation. You will use Google Gemini-powered tools to automate documentation, test case generation, and legacy languages to cloud native architectures.
  • Direct the activities of other engineers and vendor partners. Perform deep-dive code reviews and architecture audits to ensure functional consistency between legacy and modern systems.
  • Design and implement risk mitigation using a combination of tooling and planning.
