Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager, YouTube

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in policy analysis and campaigns, working on technology issues or the policy environments that surround them.
  • 7 years of experience working within government, think tanks, public interest groups, technology industry groups, or corporate public policy organizations.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience discerning the priorities and activities of government officials and track record of impacting legislation and other governmental outcomes
  • Experience advising and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to design and deliver work products.
  • Understanding of YouTube’s primary product offerings and their intersection with the public policy environment.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging public policy trends relating to online content platforms, child safety and privacy, and technology generally.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including assessing and negotiating regulatory or legislative proposals and texts.

About the job

As a member of Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy team, you'll be part of a global government affairs team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. You’ll combine creativity and intellectual excellence with the organizational skills to manage various campaigns, projects and initiatives. In this role, you’ll advocate for Google to bring external perspectives back into the company to inform our perception and direction. You're passionate about the opportunity to shape the future of how we use and build technology for everyone.

As a member of the Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team at YouTube, you will be an ambassador for YouTube’s issues and interests in India. You are a flexible generalist and able to prioritise in order to deliver on projects and initiatives across a range of subjects and policy matters. You will develop a thorough understanding of YouTube’s products, policies, and operations. You will track various regulatory proposals and analyze their potential impact on YouTube’s business and product equities and share policy knowledge with internal stakeholders such as Trust and Safety, Legal, and Marketing. You will collaborate across teams and functions to help support and implement strategies which support the company’s engagement with government and stakeholders, advance our business drivers and protect our ability to operate in the market. You will demonstrate excellent problem-solving and organizational skills and communicate in person and in writing.

Google takes its responsibilities seriously, including engaging with government and other stakeholders on important public policy challenges. The Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team leads the company’s engagement with executive branch officials, legislators, regulators and third-parties in the formation of public policy. Working closely with Google leaders, GAPP seeks to identify key policy issues, listen carefully to others’ views and opinions, and distill and share the company’s perspective on those issues with external stakeholders. While we focus on challenges affecting the internet, our issue areas are increasingly broad and encompass many areas where public policy, business, and technology intersect.

Responsibilities

  • Shape policy positions through a cross-functional approach; design and implement advocacy campaigns and strategies on and issues with little guidance.
  • Conduct analysis of and negotiating positions on regulatory or legislative proposals related to policy issues that impact YouTube’s creators, users and its product and business equities.
  • Assess and advise the Youtube GAPP India Director and internal stakeholders on the public policy implications of initiatives during any product development and launch process.
  • Act as a critical contributor who understands motivations and personalities of stakeholders and uses this to support the approach, without losing sight of Google’s equities and policy positions.
  • Other duties as required to improve YouTube’s external reputation, understanding of the product, and achieve public policy goals.
